Because No True ̶S̶c̶o̶t̶s̶m̶a̶n̶ Christian would act like this.

In the No True Scotsman fallacy, the arguer is trying to preserve the purity of the group by saying that no TRUE member of that group would ever do that.

The problem with this fallacy as applied to Christianity in particular is that the definition of salvation (or being a Christian or being allowed to stay in a church) varies so much between denominations (who all claim to be the One True Way) that I doubt most could ever come to an agreement on one definition. The Inquisition and Calvinism and Cromwell all come to mind as conflicts between competing religious factions.

Who gets to decide? What is a real Christian?

Some things you belong to because you were born into it: the nobility, or an ethnicity, or a family line.

But even those are easily muddied.

Nobility: Maybe you were born on the wrong side of the blanket to a nobleman’s mistress. Are you still really nobility? I don’t know, because I’m ‘Murican. I guess you’re sort of noble but excluded from privileges.

Ethnicity: if you’re a percentage, which percentage gets to claim you? Both? Neither?
