Walking on Eggshells: When Covert Narcissists Break the Marriage but Blame You

Humpty Dumpty shouldn’t have been on that wall. It made no sense. I should not have been in that marriage, either. But there we were.

She checked the clock. He’d be home soon. She went into hyper speed, with an imaginary audience of one. Would he notice it was nice? Not likely. But if wasn’t nice, he’d be thinking she didn’t do anything all day.

She had degrees in education and had been a teacher. She loved being home with the kids, although it was by no means easy. But it meant she had no outside life, went nowhere, just stayed, trapped, in a cul-de-sac with an HOA and nosy neighbors.

She loaded the dishwasher, wiped everything down.

She prepped everything at lightning speed, cutting and steaming and slicing and arranging the table, complete with flowers. She was fine with buying herself flowers. He sometimes brought them from a Costco trip, at her daughter’s suggestion, it turned out.

She wanted everyone to enjoy dinner. She loved making people feel better.

She’d heard of a trick for cranky husbands, where you fry some onions to give the impression that you’re already making dinner. She had never done that. She enjoyed cooking, she enjoyed making the home comfortable, even if she…
