My Ending
I kept checking my phone.
Was I single yet?
I was sitting in a sushi restaurant, waiting to hear from my almost-ex-husband that the divorce had been finalized.
Nine weeks had passed since I had found out the surprising facts that my good Christian husband, the one I had trusted with my life…
1) wanted out of the marriage
2) was refusing to go to counseling
3) was admitting that there was “the possibility of someone else” but “didn’t cheat” (roll eyes).
When I got his text from the courthouse, saying it was over, I did not cry. I had already been crying for weeks, blaming myself, apologizing for everything I could think of during the whole marriage (20 years and 4 kids).
It’s not like we were happy.
The night he picked the fight with me, his baby blue eyes turned into dark, serial killer eyes.
I had asked him if he wanted to go to a movie — Star Trek.
